Technical Roadmap & Future Outlook

We are continuously pushing the boundaries of mechanical efficiency and digital control integration. Here is how we stay ahead.

Advanced Gear Metallurgy & Geometry

By utilizing Swiss-engineered high-precision gear hobbing and carbon-nitriding heat treatment, our gears sustain higher torsional stress without teeth chipping. We are transitioning our standard planetary gear sets from traditional sintered metal to high-density alloy steels to achieve a 30% increase in torque density.

Additionally, we integrate specialized engineering plastics (like POM and PEEK) inside the primary stages of gearboxes where acoustics are critical, achieving silent operations in medical and smart-home applications.

Embedded Smart Controllers & IoT

The future of motion control lies in intelligence. Our latest BLDC geared motors feature built-in drivers with micro-controllers supporting CANopen, Modbus, and EtherCAT fieldbus communications. This allows for real-time telemetry output, including operational temperature, load conditions, and predictive wear analysis.

Integrated magnetic and optical encoders (up to 4096 pulses per revolution) provide closed-loop control, ensuring high precision in robotic joint rotation and automatic tooling positioning.

Technical Q&A & Support

Have technical questions regarding brushless motors? Read through our engineering FAQ directory below.

1. What are the main benefits of using a Brushless DC (BLDC) motor over a Brushed DC motor?

Brushless DC motors replace mechanical commutators and brushes with electronic control. This results in several clear advantages: (a) Longer Lifespan: Since there are no brushes to wear down, life spans are typically limited only by bearing wear, often exceeding 20,000 hours. (b) Higher Efficiency: BLDC motors operate at 85-90% efficiency compared to 60-70% for brushed variants, resulting in lower thermal dissipation. (c) Less Electrical Noise: No physical arcing occurs, which significantly reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) in sensitive medical or telecommunication systems.

2. How does a planetary gearbox differ from a worm gearbox in gear motors?

Planetary gearboxes feature multiple gears rotating around a central sun gear, distributing load torque evenly across the gear set. This design offers high torque density, excellent efficiency (up to 95%), and high coaxial performance, though it carries a higher price point. In contrast, worm gearboxes feature a 90-degree output shaft configuration and offer a self-locking mechanism (meaning the output shaft cannot drive the input shaft under load), which is critical for safety applications like sliding doors. Worm gearboxes are generally more affordable but have lower mechanical efficiency due to sliding friction.

3. Can your brushless gear motors operate under extreme environmental conditions?

Yes. We design and test motors to operate under severe temperatures using our Programmable Constant Temperature & Humidity Chambers. Our standard motors operate between -20°C and +60°C. For specialty aerospace, automotive, or industrial refrigeration needs, we utilize specialized low-temperature greases and high-temperature insulation class F/H windings, extending operations from -40°C to +105°C. In addition, we offer sealed enclosures up to IP67.

4. What role do Hall sensors play in a brushless gear motor?

Unlike brushed motors, brushless motors require electronic commutation. Hall sensors detect the absolute position of the rotor magnetic poles and feed this position to the driver/controller. The controller then energizes the stator windings in a precise sequence to maintain continuous rotation. For precision positioning, speed regulation, and feedback control loop systems, Hall sensors (or optical/magnetic encoders) are critical for peak efficiency and prevention of startup stuttering.

5. What electrical parameters can Taunton Motors customize for OEMs?

We provide extensive electrical customization. This includes custom voltage windings ranging from 12V DC, 24V DC, 36V DC, to 48V DC, custom rated speed/current draws, dynamic brake functions, current limits, and built-in drivers. Mechanical customizations include custom shaft profiles (single/double D-cut, splines, keyways, cross-holes), custom flange mountings, and specialized gear materials (metal, plastic, or hybrid gear stages).

6. How does Taunton Motors guarantee low noise in gearheads?

Noise control is built into our core engineering. First, we utilize high-precision Swiss-style hobbing machines to minimize gear mesh tolerance errors. Second, each rotor undergoes dynamic balance tests on precision testers to eliminate mechanical vibration. Finally, we evaluate finished motor gearboxes inside our specialized Soundproof Noise Testing Chambers, ensuring overall operational noise remains below 45dB (and down to 35dB for custom medical specifications) at a 30cm testing distance.
